Why Is My Car Overheating And What To Do?

There’s never a good moment to notice your car is overheating. It usually means that something has gone wrong or is about to go wrong with your vehicle. The first step is to not panic; normally if you notice your car overheating, then it usually means it’s time to bring the car into a garage or mechanic to see what’s going on. If you do this promptly, then a lot of the time and significant damage can be avoided.

There are usually a few common reasons as to why your car will be overheating, and in this article, we’ll be taking a look at a few of those. Hopefully, it’s an easy fix and won’t cost you too much time or money to get your car sorted.

What Causes Your Car To Overheat?

Leak In The Cooling System

If there’s a leak in your radiator, water pump, head gasket or a problem with your thermostat, then your engine isn’t going to be able to cool properly. Coolant leaks are easy to spot because the coolant can be seen dripping, spraying, seeping or bubbling from the leaky component. You may be able to fix the leak yourself if it’s not too tricky, but you may want to bring it to a mechanic to take a look.

Coolant Issues

Even if you don’t have a leak into your cooling system, there can still be problems. The wrong coolant in your car can prevent your engine from cooling correctly. This can also happen if the coolant is running low in your vehicle. Always double-check that you’re using the right type of coolant for your car and that there is enough coolant so the engine can cool sufficiently.

Bad Thermostat

Your thermostat is a key valve in the cooling system that ensures the coolant can pass through to the radiator when necessary. When the thermostat gets stuck in the closed position, coolant can no longer pass through, and your engine will begin overheating.

Radiator Problems

If there’s a leak or a block in your car’s radiator fan, then heat can’t properly escape your vehicle, which inevitably causes the temperature of the engine to rise. Radiator problems can often be a little bit more complicated than some other automotive issues, so a mechanic may well be required to help get radiator problems solved.

Blown Head Gasket

When your engine is in a severe state of overheating, then your head gasket is at risk of blowing. The head gasket in your car is designed to seal the cylinders in your engine; doing this helps to ensure maximum compression to prevent coolant and engine oil from leaking into the engine’s cylinders. When the head gasket blows this process stops, and this can lead to leaks and other problems with your car. Jiffy Lube Technicians working on a car
